Diethylene glycol (DEG) is an inorganic, colorless and sweet taste substance that use in many industrial processes. This component absorbs moisture from the air very well. Its molecular formula is C4H10O3 and has boiling point in 473oF at 760 mmHg and Melting point in 14oF. DEG is denser than water and its viscosity is 0.30 centipoise at 25oC. Is miscible in water and absorbs it. This property is very useful in gas processing. After sweetening process, it is necessary to absorb natural gas moisture to prevent hydrate formation and pipelines corrosion.

Production

The method of producing DEG is this way: ethylene oxide in high temperature in presence of the catalyst (silver oxide). By ethylene oxide hydration in this situation, DEG is obtained.

Applications of Diethylene glycol

Consumption of this component can be divided into two categories. Industrial consumption and consumer consumption. Five-major DEG market in the world as follows: Asia Pacific, North America, South America, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In Asia-pacific, this market faced with strong demand growth due to good government regulations in 2017 [1]. According to forecast period, Global DEG Growth rate is projected to grow at CAGR of 4.3% in 2022 and is anticipated to reach USD 350 million by 2022 [2].

Automotive and building industry has a big effect in Diethylene glycol market. In Asia, because of rapid population growth, consequently increasing construction growth and need to automotive, demand for DEG has been fast growing. In addition, because of the number of plastic companies and manufactures in North America and Europe, the DEG market volume is high. Tobacco industries is another reason for the market growth in those regions.

Industrial consumptions:

It can use as an accelerator or catalyst in a chemical reaction in industry. In addition, DEG can be useful in fuels and its additives. Use of DEG in coating and painting industry is another its industrial application. It is used widely in gas processing as a moisture absorbent and help to prevent hydrate formation and pipelines corrosion. Other industrial applications include Surface-active agents, as a solvent in printing inks, lubricant additives, plasticizer, solvent, chemical intermediate, demulsifiers, emulsifiers and personal care [3].

Consumer consumptions:

In this case, we focus on domestic and Non-industrial consumptions. Diethylene glycol can be used in care products in automotive. We use it in adhesives and sealants applications. In addition, DEG has wide applications in construction materials and building industry. Painting and coating, use in rubber product, Laundry and dishwashing products and floor covering agent are its other applications [3].
