Potassium acetate (CH3CO2K), also known as Diuretic salt, is a moderately water soluble crystalline Potassium source that decomposes to Potassium oxide on heating.
Potassium Acetate is the acetate salt form of potassium, an essential macromineral. Potassium maintains intracellular tonicity, is required for nerve conduction, cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscle contraction, production of energy, the synthesis of nucleic acids, maintenance of blood pressure and normal renal function. This agent has potential antihypertensive effects and when taken as a nutritional supplement may prevent hypokalemia.
All metallic acetates are inorganic salts of a metal cation and the acetate anion, a univalent (-1 charge) polyatomic ion composed of two carbon atoms ionically bound to three hydrogen and two oxygen atoms (Symbol: CH3COO) for a total formula weight of 59.05. Acetates are excellent precursors for production of ultrahigh-purity compounds, catalysts, and nanoscale materials.
Acetates are also known to be good preservatives and for that reason Potassium acetate can be used in processed meat products and ready-to-eat meals to control microbiological growth and to reduce sodium by replacing sodium acetate.
Potassium acetate is generally used in laboratory routines. It can be used as a salt for ethanol precipitation of DNA and in molecular biology applications, potassium acetate precipitates sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and SDS-bound proteins to allow their removal from DNA.
Pharmaceutical and very pure grade Potassium Acetate can be used in the manufacture of antibiotics, penicillin, insulin and in peritoneal dialysis solutions. It can also be used for diabetes treatment in pharmaceutical.
Pure and technical grade Potassium Acetate can be used as a polymerization catalyst and in the production of polyurethane foam and in carbon black production. The product is also used as a dehydrating agent, a textile conditioner, a flame retardant and as a drilling fluid additive. Potassium Acetate (technical grade) can be used in fertilizers as a potassium source with a potassium (K) level of minimum 39.0% (94.0% expressed as K2O).
Applications of Potassium Acetate
It can be used in broad variety of industries such as food, beverage, pharmaceutical, health and Personal care products, Agriculture/Animal Feed/Poultry
Potassium acetate can be used in combination with acetic acid to create a pH buffering systems in food. It can also be used in low sodium recipes as a replacement for sodium acetate. Due to its dry form, potassium acetate can be applied either in dry or liquid pre-blends or directly to the final food product.
Potassium acetate can be used as a flavoring agent to impart a mild vinegar taste to food products, for example potato crisps, other snacks or potato salads.
Potassium acetate can be used as a sodium free alternative of sodium acetate. In all cases, it is advisable to carry out an initial test, in order to determine the precise organoleptic and physical effects ofthe added potassium acetate.
Potassium Acetate is used as acidity regulator, preservative, flavoring agent in food.
It can be used in low sodium foods as replacement for sodium acetate and sodium diacetate respectively. Due to their dry form, they can be applied either in dry or liquid pre-blends or directly to the final food product.
The alkaline lysis method of plasmid purification involves the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate to lyse the cells and sodium hydroxide (a strong base) to denture the DNA. Potassium acetate is then added for two reasons:
- The acidic acetate buffer neutralizes the solution and allows catenated plasmids to renature.
- Potassium dodecyl sulfate is poorly soluble in water. Adding potassium to solutions of dodecyl sulfate precipitates it, thus facilitating its removal.
Potassium Acetate E261 may be used in cosmetics and personal care products. Products in which these ingredients may be found include baby products, bath products, cleansing products, eye makeup, shaving preparations and hair and skin care products.
Potassium acetate is highly suitable for foliar applications because of high foliar uptake combined with low risk of phyto-toxicity. Potassium acetate fertilizer is compatible with most pesticides, however, it is not possible to test all pesticide mixes.
