Trisodium Citrate

Trisodium citrate dehydrate (C6H5Na3O7.2H2O), is a tribasic salt of citric acid. It has a sour taste similar to citric acid, and is salty as well. It is produced by complete neutralisation of citric acid with high purity sodium hydroxide or carbonate and subsequent crystallisation. It is produced by the reaction between citric acid and sodium hydroxide. Trisodium Citrate dihydrate is available as translucent crystals or as a granular or fine granular powder.Trisodium citrate dihydrate is widely used in foods, beverages and various technical applications mainly as buffering, sequestering or emulsifying agent.

Trisodium citrate dihydrate occurs as white, granular crystals or as white, crystalline powder with a pleasant, salty taste. It is slightly deliquescent in moist air, freely soluble in water and practically insoluble in ethanol (96 %).

Trisodium citrate dihydrate is a non-toxic, neutral salt with low reactivity. It is chemically stable if stored at ambient temperatures. Trisodium citrate dihydrate is fully biodegradable and can be disposed of with regular waste or sewage.

Transport and Storage Conditions
The Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate may be stored at room conditions at less than 30 °C and a relative humidity below 70%. Shelf life is 5 years if kept it in their original packaging and following good storage practices (GSP). This product should be stored on dry pallets in roofed and well ventilated areas. A long period of storage is recommended to keep the product at less than 20 °C and a relative humidity below 50%. Avoid high humidity, high temperatures and direct or indirect sunlight over the product during transportation or storage.


Applications of Trisodium citrate

Trisodium citrate is used as an antioxidant, and food additive for flavor, while enhancing the quality and stability of foods and as a preservative. Trisodium citrate dehydrate may be used in the pharmaceutical, chemical, industrial applications and building industry, as control and regulator of acidity, pH stabilizer, buffers agent, chelating metal ions, chelating of calcium, chelated agent in fertilizers, modifies and enhances the flavor of food and canned goods, nutritional and sport beverages as an available source of sodium, antifreeze, flavor enhancer, and preserves stability of active ingredients in medicines. In Beverage
Trisodium Citrate is used as acidity regulator in drinks such as in Alcoholic Beverages Carbonated Soft Drinks, Instant Drinks, Syrups, Juice Drinks, Tea and Coffee, Sports and Energy Drinks

In Pharmaceutical
Trisodium citrate can be used in pharmaceutical to help lessen the acidity levels in the urine. It is also used before general anaesthesia to prevent inhalation of stomach acid.

Other Uses
Trisodium citrate may be used in all types of cosmetic products, including baby products, make-up, lipstick, bath products, soaps and detergents, hair dyes and colors, and hair and skin care products.
