Triethylene glycol

Triethylene glycol (TEG) is a toxic, colorless and non-flammable liquid that is denser than water like diethylene glycol. Its molecular formula is C6H14O4 and has a mild odor. Molecular Weight of TEG is 150.174 g/mol. Its boiling point and melting point is 545oF and 24.3oF respectively. This component is miscible in water and is slightly soluble in chloroform [3]. Triethylene glycol has low vapor pressure and its viscosity and density is 47.8 centipoise at 20oC and 1.125 at 68oF respectively. It uses for many industrial and non-industrial processes. Like diethylene glycol, has a key role in gas processing and gas sweetening. Also, used as a plasticizer for vinyl polymers. It is generally classified as non-hazardous.

Production

There are different ways to produce this component, but one of the most popular processes is that we introduce as follows.

TEG obtain as by-product of the oxidation of ethylene in presence of silver oxide catalyst [1].

Application of Triethylene glycol

Triethylene glycol has many different industrial and non-industrial applications. Increasing its applications in automotive products and constructions due to rapid population growth rate and emerging economies of China, Brazil, and Mexico have caused a shining future for this market. We anticipated global TEG market worth reach to USD 718.3 million by 2022. Forecast show this market in gas processing segment can reach to CAGR of over 3.5% from 2015 to 2022 [2].

We can divide its consumptions into two categories:

1- Industrial consumptions

2- Consumer (non-industrial) consumptions

Industrial consumptions

This component can be used as a solvent in many of chemical processes. In some cases is useful in Adhesives and sealant chemicals. Like DEG is useful in plasticizers, intermediates industries. Use as absorbents and is one of the most applications of TEG. OfCorse main uses for this liquid are related to its hygroscopic property. In natural gas sweetening carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gases, which is referred to as acid gases, must be remove from the natural gas stream. After sweetening process, natural gas has slight moisture that should be removed to prevent hydrate formation and pipelines corrosion. TEG absorbs moisture very well. This substance is useful in fuels and their additives too.

Consumer consumptions

TEG has wide uses in this segment like industrial one. Its applications as anti-freeze and de-icing goals, automotive care products, building, and constructions use has attracted enormous interest.

Painting and coating applications, Laundry and dishwashing products are another use of this liquid in our life [3].
