Diethylene glycol (DEG) is an inorganic, colorless and sweet taste material that is used in many industrial procedures. This component absorbs moisture from the air well. Its molecular formula is C4H10O3 and has boiling point in 473oF at 760 mmHg and Melting point in 14oF. DEG is denser than water and its viscosity is 0.30 centipoise at 25oC. it is soluble in water and absorbs it. This property is very useful in gas processing. After the sweetening process, it is necessary to absorb natural gas moisture to prevent hydrate formation and pipeline corrosion.
The method of producing DEG is this way: ethylene oxide in high temperature in presence of the catalyst (silver oxide). By ethylene oxide hydration in this situation, DEG is obtained.
