Production Process of Monopotassium Phosphate:

In general, most phosphate materials are produced from phosphoric acid. This acid itself is produced from phosphate rock. To do this, phosphate rock slurry is poured into the reactor and then phosphoric acid is produced during leaching. To produce MKP, potassium hydroxide is reacted with phosphoric acid in a reactor, and after purification and cooling, the final product is prepared for granulation.

KOH + H3PO4 → KH2PO4 + H2O

MKP is also produced through the neutralization reaction of phosphoric acid and potassium carbonate.

2H3PO4 + K2CO3 → 2KH2PO4 + H2CO3

Monopotassium Phosphate Uses:

The uses of this compound can be classified into agricultural, food, medical and cosmetic industries, which we will examine in the following:

Agriculture:

Many elements are necessary for the growth and development of plants, but among them, the three elements of potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen are of higher importance. MKP is widely used as fertilizer due to its potassium, phosphorus, and excellent solubility in water.

Monopotassium phosphate fertilizers

Also, this compound has a significant role in agriculture and horticulture due to having the necessary elements required by plants as one of the compound fertilizers. The characteristics of monopotassium phosphate fertilizer that are very important for farmers in using and reducing costs are:

  • Increase rooting rate.
  • Regulate protein synthesis in the plant and thus increase cell division and better plant growth.
  • Protect the plant during the cold season and in dry weather.
  • Very good supplement for calcareous soils due to the acidic pH of fertilizer.
  • Keeping soil acidity constant due to high buffering properties.
  • Increase the function of plant enzymes.
  • Proper safety and environmental compatibility.

Research has shown that this substance prevents the growth of fungi when used on plant leaves and increases their effectiveness when used with pesticides.

Food:

The food grade of monopotassium phosphate helps to stabilize, thicken and regulate the acidity and moisture of food and is used in the production of the following:

  • Processed meat
  • Sausage
  • Hamburger
  • Canned and dried vegetables
  • Chocolate
  • Pudding
  • Fruit juices
  • dairy products

Medicine:

Potassium and phosphate ions are essential substances for the body and this product is used to compensate for the deficiency of these ions in the body. Monopotassium phosphate has a significant role in regulating the pH of body cells, it is used as an active ingredient in enzymatic reactions. Its application in carbohydrate metabolism and tissue synthesis is also significant.

Cosmetics:

Monopotassium phosphate regulates the pH of cosmetics and thus improves its properties. On the other hand, due to the effect of pH on the control of spoilage, the substance can increase the shelf life of cosmetic products. This product is also used in the production of toothpaste and mouthwash to protect tooth enamel.
