Acrylic Acid-2-acrylamide-2-Methylpropane Sulfonic Acid Copolymer (AA/AMPS) is a type of block copolymer whose monomers are specifically acrylic acid and acrylamide Methyl propane sulfonic acid. The main chain of AA/AMPS copolymer contains 40% of acrylic acid. It is chemically highly polar and this polarity property of AA/AMPS is widely used in water treatment industries. The largest target industries of this copolymer are water purification industries and dye and textile industries.

AA/AMPS Copolymer Appearance

 

Another application of this chemical is a corrosion inhibitor and sediment on metals such as iron and steel. They are also used to purify and clean contaminants present in high concentrations; In the following, we will discuss more the major applications and physical and chemical properties of copolymers, such as their chemical and physical properties.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Copolymers:

As briefly mentioned above, the chemical structure of this copolymer is composed of two different monomers. The appearance of this copolymer in the standard condition is a colorless liquid like Polypropylene glycol (PPG). This structure comprises carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid groups. The chemical properties of these polar compounds are such that they can be used as a helper and an improving agent for better dye dispersion.

 

The molecular weight of AA/AMPS copolymer:

Several factors affect the molecular weight of a copolymer. Factors such as how, type, and conditions of the copolymerization process, lateral branches, the structure of the final copolymer, cross-link density, polarity, and type of copolymer.The type of each of the monomers that make up the copolymer structure and the percentage of use of each directly affect the physical and chemical properties and specifically the molecular weight. The production process of AA/AMPS:

First, to start the copolymerization process, add a certain amount of deionized water and isopropanol to the reactor. Adding these materials is aimed at controlling the reaction parameters, and it is better to put these materials in the reactor for 15 minutes before starting the process, and by stirring them, the reactor is ready to start the process. The process begins by adding AA and AMPS into the reactor and the titration process will continue for one hour.

 

Synthesis of AA/AMPS Copolymer

 

The reaction is continued for 2 hours at a temperature of 30 ° C, in the last step, we add sodium to the contents inside the reactor and bring the acidity of the solution to 4, the colorless and clear solution and the desired product will come.

AA/AMPS Copolymer Uses:

The resulting copolymer, the production process of which was described in the previous section can be widely used as a dispersant of mineral sediments or as a stabilizer for calcium phosphonate.

 

The application of AA/AMPS in water treatment industry

 

Systems referred to in the industry as refrigerants and in which water is used as a coolant use this anti-Scallan.

The dye, resin, and textile industries use this material to spread the dye in the fibers and possible.

Safety:

All safety and health points should be considered when using this substance, since AA/AMPS copolymer is prone to ignition, it is better to avoid smoking in storage, eating, swallowing, and inhaling vapors and high concentrations of it. Avoid severely and in acute cases, it is better to go to medical centers or emergency.

Transporting and storage:

Use a suitable Indian package to store this copolymer and choose a place to store it away from heat or direct sunlight.
