Description

Methyl methacrylate is an organic substance which is also known as Methyl 2-methylpropenoate. The IUPAC name of this clear and colorless liquid is methyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate. This material has an acrid and fruity odor.

 

MMA with the formula C₂H₈O₂ and molecular weight of 100.12g dissolves very little in water. If Methyl methacrylate is heated, it decomposes and produces irritating fumes.

Production of Methyl methacrylate:

The production of Methyl methacrylate structure is possible in different ways, but the main method of its production is the use of statin cyanohydrin (ACH).

This method is as follows:

first, from the reaction of hydrogen cyanide with acetone, acetone cyanohydrin is formed. After that, this material reacts with sulfuric acid and Methacrylate sulfate is formed. Finally, this material reacts with alcohol and water and the structure of metacrylic acid is created.

Uses of Methyl methacrylate:

It easily polymerizes to form high molecular weight copolymers. The main applications of MMA are in casting sheets, lighting fixtures, plumbing, glass and skylights, latex paints, adhesives, varnishes and glazing resins.

It is used in making plastic, resin, dentistry, ophthalmology and orthopedic surgery. MMA is used to make prostheses in medicine and as a filler in dentistry.

Uses in adhesives:

Methyl methacrylate is the main base for most acrylate polymers and an important comonomer in the formulation of adhesives and paints.

It is very reactive and durable in liquid adhesives and can connect all types of substrates together.
