Production:

This material can be made from the electrolysis of a cold solution of potassium bisulfate in sulfuric acid, which is equivalent to the following reaction.

2 KHSO4 → K2S2O8 + H2

It can also be prepared by adding potassium bisulfate to a solution of more soluble ammonium peroxydisulfate. In fact, it can be prepared by the chemical oxidation of potassium sulfate with fluorine.

Applications of potassium persulfate:

This material can be used to initiate the polymerization of various alkenes to produce commercial polymers such as styrene-butadiene rubber and polytetrafluoroethylene. This compound is used as an oxidizing agent, in bleaching and lightening powders, it oxidizes the colors in the hair shaft and helps lighten the hair.

Storage:

Store potassium persulfate in a closed container in a cool, dry place away from combustible materials.

MSDS:

Potassium persulfate is a dangerous substance and can cause an allergic skin reaction. In case of skin contact, wash the area with plenty of water and soap. Be sure to use gloves, clothing and protective glasses while working. The contact of this compound with the eyes causes serious damage to them; After contact, wash the affected eye with water for a few minutes. Be sure to work with this combination in an open or ventilated environment. Inhalation of this compound is also dangerous, after inhalation leave the environment and breathe fresh air.

Conclusion:

A strong mineral compound that exists as a white or colorless crystalline solid and is a strong oxidizer is potassium persulfate. This substance with the formula K2S2O8 is used to initiate polymerization or as an oxidizing agent.
